Following a recent survey of the Dundee music scene, a collective seemed like a good idea.
join via email and help us build it.
We invite musicians and music fans to join us in championing the city’s music scene, with a primary focus on helping people who create music, particularly original music as this currently lacks support.
We will continue to gather input from people involved in music throughout the city, and use this collective voice to help improve things for everyone. There will be a series of informal meetings throughout the year, open to all, and focused on topics raised by the members, or aspects of training and learning. There will also be direct assistance to musicians, to help raise awareness and promote events - this was a recurring theme in the survey responses. This will include funding promotion via poster creation and social media advertising. We also plan to host a training event, to help improve skills in practical areas. To ensure the collective is sustainable beyond the first 12 months, we may consider accepting donations from members or local traders.
Here are four things already underway, inspired by the number of survey responses mentioning promotion, collectives, songwriting + training:
1) If you have a poster designed for an upcoming gig in Dundee - and would like help with physical copies - email it through - by Tue 15th October - we'll cover costs of printing A4 posters - between 10-25 copies, depending on demand. Posters can be collected at the Saturday event below.
2) Come along on Sat 19th October between 3.30-5pm - we're hosting a monthly event showcasing singers and songwriters, there will be tea/coffee/biscuits and a relaxed atmosphere. More details about the event here.
3) At the same event, we've got scope to do some songwriting collaboration or assistance if anyone is keen. As well as the performance area, there's plenty space where folks could work on songs, etc.
4) We've also had interest in starting a Girls Rock School for Dundee, similar to groups already running in Edinburgh and Glasgow - if you are interested in helping organise this, please get in touch.
There's no cost to you associated with any of this (donations welcome for tea/biscuits).
The venue is The Chaplaincy Centre at Dundee University, a great space with wonderful acoustics @ Cross Row, Dundee DD1 4HN
